Prestwich FC 3, Prestwich Heys 4
Friendly match at Littleton Road, Salford
Saturday 11th July 2009
Fearing the worst after our Manchester League neighbours raced in to a three-nil lead inside only 17 minutes, the team showed great character and determination to battle their was back in to Saturday’s friendly at Littleton Road.
Scott Parker in the Prestwich goal can count himself unfortunate to concede the first three goals as on each occassion, he pulled off superb reaction saves only for Heys to react quickest to the rebounds and tuck the balls away.
Prestwich’s experimental three-at-the-back, originally meant to cater for absent defenders Steadman and Ward, was quickly abandoned as manager Lee Metcalfe switched back to a traditional 4-4-2 formation.
And from this moment on, it was a different game as Prestwich set about finding a way back in to the match.
Stephen Foley saw a shot well saved by Murphy in the Heys goal after Martin Pilkington’s free-kick flew just inches over the crossbar.
But when Foley raced through the Heys defenders to collect a loose ball, the striker clamly slotted past the advancing ‘keeper to notch up the clubs first goal of the new season.
Just after the half-hour and the Heys had their three-goal advantage restored with a measured lob from outside the box leaving Parker no chance.
However, the newly elected Lancashire Amateur League club hit back before half time when forward Declan Lewis rounded the Heys keeper and fired home from the angle.
On the hour, Prestwich narrowed the Heys lead further when striker Danny Ingham fired in to the bottom corner from 25 yards.
With Lois Maynard and Martin Pilkington pulling the strings in midfield, Prestwich were now enjoying themselves, passing the ball around their opponents with ease, spending large periods of time with Heys penned back in their own half.
Pilkington even had a late chance to equalise against the team five divisions above us in the non-league ladder, but unfortunately rolled his effort agonisingly wide of the far post with the Heys ‘keeper beaten.
