RESERVES DEFEAT BUT BOOST FOR FIRSTS

PRESTWICH FC had the best possible weekend and that’s even after their scheduled league game at Old Boltonians was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Their nearest rivals, Hesketh Casuals – two points behind Prestwich with a game in hand, endured a surprise 6-2 defeat away at Chaddertonians Reserves on Saturday.

And although there’s still ten games to go in this season’s campaign, the Heys Road side now know that Lancs Amateur League Division Two glory is all in their own hands.

Prestwich manager Lee Metcalfe, whose side have 10 wins and 2 draws from their last 12 games, was understandably delighted with the result.

“We were really disappointed when our game was called off as all the lads were well up for the match and hopefully continuing the fantastic run we’re currently on,” said Metcalfe.

“But when news of Hesketh’s result came through, we were all buzzing as we all know it’s now all down to us.

“There’s still a long way to go but we’re in the driving seat now and it gives us a great chance of achieving the first part of the clubs target of getting in to the Premier Division within two seasons.”

And Prestwich will be looking for a further three points when they take on Rochdale St Clements Reserves at Heys Road on Saturday, kick-off 2:30pm.

• Prestwich Reserves went down 4-3 at Ashtonians Reserves in their Division Six game on Saturday.

Two goals from new signing Jonathan Adlington (pictured above) gave the visitors a lead before a second half fight-back turned the game around for Ashtonians.

James Tyldesley’s late strike was a mere consolation for Robbie Monetti’s side.

• Prestwich Sunday team’s Millennium Cup quarter-final tie against Crown FC was called off following the early morning snowfall.
