Prestwich enjoyed two six wicket wins last weekend with a maximum five points at Irlam on Saturday before taking the impressive scalp of Northern Premier League outfit Chorley on Sunday, setting up a group quarter final tie at home to Darwen, also of the NPL.

REPORT – An unlikely spinning double act helped Prestwich to a third win of their Lancashire County League campaign.

The Heys Road side then took the notable scalp of Northern League hotshots Chorley in the National Knockout Cup to complete a triumphant weekend.

Despite finishing rock bottom last year, a strengthened Irlam side posed a number of early worries for Prestwich at the home of the former steelworkers.

Matthew Hood fast-tracked to 40 as the Heys pacemen Danny Jones and Olly Holt struggled to make the breakthrough.

But the introduction of spinner Andy Bradley literally turned the game on its head.

Making the most of a turning wicket, he dismissed both openers in quick succession to rein in Irlam from a runaway 48 for 0 to 52 for 2.

Phil Kyle chipped in with a wicket, but skipper Steven Lorenzini then threw the ball back to pro Jones to link up with Bradley in an all-spin attack.

And the shrewd move paid dividends as Jones immediately struck with his off spin, and the home side found themselves on a downward spiral.

Bradley proved unplayable at times and his hardy 17-over spell was rewarded with 4 for 33 while Jones also bagged a four-wicket haul.

Only Johnson provided any middle order resistance with 26 as the home side set a target of 132.

But this task was not completed without a touch of the collywobbles as 20 for 0 became for 38 for 3, including the needless run out of Jones.

When Lewis Johnston’s stumps were uprooted by Manny Khan for 27, the game was somewhat in the balance at 62 for 4.

But Lorenzini played the captain’s role to a tee with an unbeaten 36 and Holt, giving a repeat dose of his previous innings, cracking 43 not out to pass the required total.

On Sunday, a sterling all-round bowling performance saw Chorley – who won the National Knockout competition in the mid 1990s – routed on home soil for 123.

Then 16-year-old James Wharmby played a starring role in the visitors’ reply with an impressive unbeaten innings of 41, supported by Johnston and then with another undefeated knock from Holt to earn a second round clash with Darwen.

LCL Results Matchday 5

Amila Weththasinghe’s 7-51 helped bowl Woodbank out for 108 and his unbeaten 33 steered Stand to an 8 wicket victory giving them a 1 point lead over Flowery Field at the top of the table.
