Walkden Cup Round 1 at Heys Road, Prestwich
22nd & 23rd May 2010

Prestwich endured two mammoth run chases in the sweltering heat this weekend as they first slumped to an 86 run defeat at Champions Denton West on Saturday. In the cup the following day, and having seen the visitors amass 299, Lewis Johnston and James Wharmby both hit half centuries in an impressive start for the home side.

But as the middle order fell at regular intervals, it was left to big-hitting Sam Holden to try and rescue the game. His quick-fire 85 almost looked like it could win it until he was caught at long on with three overs remaining and his side just 36 runs short of Glossop’s massive total.

REPORT – WHAM, bam, (so nearly) Sam. Prestwich bowed out of the Walkden Cup on Sunday in a blaze of glory thanks to its young guns.

A hurricane 85 in 43 balls by 18-year-old Sam Holden nearly pulled off a miraculous win against a strong Glossop side.

The late-order fireworks followed an equally-impressive innings from 16-year-James Wharmby who struck a superb 62, preceded by 22-year-old Lewis Johnston’s first fifty for the club which got the Heys side off to a fine start.

Prestwich were facing a task of gigantic proportions as the visitors rocked up one of the highest 50-over totals seen at The Heys for a long time.

Glossop plundered 299 for the loss of just four wickets but Prestwich’s valiant reply of 263 gave the spectators plenty of thrills and the prospect of a titanic comeback.

Prestwich certainly had to toil hard in the field, as Dale Pennington and Mark Dyson staged an opening stand of 121 before Andy Bradley made the belated breakthrough, having Dyson caught in the deep by Danny Jones for 55.

But that only brought pro Perera into the arena and he clocked up a run-a-ball 56 while Pennington’s tenure ended on 74, caught at deep mid-wicket by Tom Gibson off Holden’s bowling.

With valuable contributions in the Glossop middle order, the runs kept rolling and Prestwich can thank a good fielding performance to keep it below the 300-mark.

Johnston and Chris Thomas built a solid start of 53 and although Thomas was caught for 13, Wharmby arrived at the crease and played an innings of great maturity and full of excellent timing.

Johnston struck seven fours in his 52 before he attempted a run to Perera anrd paid the ultimate price.

Wharmby then took the lead role, hitting 62 off the same number of balls, finding the boundary seven times, and striking over it on one occasion.

But with the score on 151 for 7 and Holden taking guard for his first ball, respectability looked the only conceivable target.

That was until Holden started to pepper the ball to all regions of the ground in a sustained display of lusty hitting. Nine fours and five sixes followed to keep Prestwich up with the required rate of 11 an over. He reached his maiden 50 for the first team in just 26 balls.

When Holden finally holed out to Coleman, there was a fast-diminishing 36 runs between the two sides, and the sweat on the Glossop players’ foreheads wasn’t all down to the sun’s rays.

In contrast, Prestwich’s visit to champions Denton West last Saturday saw their batting peter out tamely in pursuit of a 235-run total.

Scott Kirwin with a classy 78, Andy O’Brien with an unbeaten 44 and Lee Dale with 31 had set up the home team’s target.

Andy Bradley was the pick of the Prestwich attack, his prolonged stint of 3 for 69 from 18 overs helping to peg back West after their fluent start, while skipper Steven Lorenzini chipped in with 3 for 21 off his seven overs.

At 93 for 3 in reply, Prestwich were well in the hunt, but they wilted disappointingly to 146 all out. Thomas top scored with 43 while Jones (32) and Gareth Barnes (22 not out) were the only others to feature with the bat.

LCL Results Matchday 6

Starting the day 5 points behind leaders Stand, Glossop pro’ Bathiya Perera took 4-41 as Stand were dismissed for 184 and followed up with 74 as the home side won by 1 wicket to tie things up at the top of the table.
