Thornham 246ao (5) v Prestwich 176ao (0)
LCL Division One at Rochdale Road, Rochdale
19th June 2010
Errors in the field helped bottom club Thornham to amass 246 at Rochdale Road on Saturday. In reply, Sam Holden top scored for Prestwich with 42 but with wickets falling regularly, Steven Lorenzini’s side were eventually bowled out 70 runs short of their target.
REPORT – Prestwich’s topsy-turvy season continued when their colours were lowered at lowly Thornham.
Just one week after their hoodoo-breaking victory at Denton St Lawrence, they followed up with a show which was lame – if not lamentable.
Some abysmal fielding, with a number of catches dropped, allied to inconsistent bowling, let the home side off the hook from 66 for 5 to rack up a target of 246.
Prestwich had seized the initiative early on, with pro Danny Jones striking thrice and Andy Bradley twice.
However, it also saw a nasty incident when captain Steven Lorenzini, fielding at short mid-off, was hit flush on the head by a drive from Grey. The skipper carried on for a short time before leaving the field to recuperate fully.
While Alec McClure’s 90 was heaped with a large dose of luck, he successfully “farmed” the bowling into nearby fields, as the visitors failed to cling onto his airborne offerings.
Steve Grey struck a more conventional 62 to see Prestwich pay further for their shortcomings chances and three hours of toil ensued.
Jones (4 for 73) and Bradley (4 for 72) may have been the main wicket-takers, but they were below their normal standards.
A crawling start then didn’t help the Heys’ cause as 10 overs passed with barely 14 on the board and an uphill struggle turned into something more mountainous.
Thornham also possessed the outstanding bowler on the day in Zaffar Iqbal. He bowled unchanged for 25 overs, barely straying in line and length while getting enough movement to shackle the Prestwich batsmen.
Ironically, Prestwich found themselves at an identical score of 66 for 5 as their hosts, but they had used up many more overs.
Not helped by two run outs, the middle to late order all established a base but failed to build on it, as the rush for runs proved too much. Sam Holden top scored with 42 before he ill-judged a run, while youngster Adam Cheshire made a promising 22 at number nine.
The last action of the game fittingly fell to Iqbal, who bowled Lorenzini – coming in at number 10 and hitting a gritty 20 – with the score on 176 to give him a deserved return of 5 for 53.
An improved display will no doubt be called on for the visit of Dukinfield to The Heys this Saturday, starting at 1pm.
• Prestwich Seconds continued their unbeaten run in the league with a seven wicket win over Thornham at the Heys. John Walters took 7-for as the visitors were dismissed for just 109. John Fiorentini’s and Dave Taylor’s knocks set up a straightforward win with over 50 overs remaining in the game!
