THE END FOR THE SHANTY TOWN?

A NEW road could be built next to Prestwich Metrolink station as part of a plan to build a plot of new houses.

Landowners Frank and Aileen Hall want to demolish a number of derelict buildings on a triangular plot sited between the tram station, Heys Road and Poppythorn Lane.

They would then build 12 homes in a cul-de-sac, which they antipate to be a mix of three and four bedroom properties, served by a total of 20 parking places.

They would also construct an access road running parallel with the Metrolink track, leading to a tram car park.

The Halls’ agent, Charlotte Luckett, has been in talks with Metrolink officials. She has applied to Bury Council for outline permission for the development on behalf of the landowner.

In the application, Miss Luckett said: “The current appearance of the site is not desirable and the proposal would enhance the overall appearance of the area.

“The layout is intended to create a community within the site and hopefully creating a strong sense of place with attractive new homes.”

Residents have until July 30 to contact the council with their views on the application.

Mr Hall said: “We are delighted to be able to submit this outline application for 12 dwellings.

“Details are limited at this stage, but we believe the site will improve the overall appearance of the area.

“The site is extremely visible from the Metrolink line so it is important to be able to bring this previously developed site forward to assist towards the housing need in the area.”

The council is aiming to reach a decision by October 4.
