LCL Division One at Throstle Bank Street and Greenleach Lane
24th & 25th July 2010
Prestwich carried out a demolition job on close rivals Roe Green by bulldozing them out for just 48.
The Worsley outfit crumbled from 17 for 0 last Sunday as pro Danny Jones and Phil Kyle wreaked havoc to a side which 24 hours earlier had racked up 221 in defeating Cheetham Hill.
Jones, back in the fray after a three-match absence, put his home club to the sword with a sparkling return of 6 for 24.
Opening partner of destruction Kyle took 3 for 12 off 11 overs as Roe turned to woe.
Yet, there was no sign of such a dramatic collapse after the first four overs had seen 17 runs scored. Even Oliver Holt’s nimble catch at mid-wicket off Kyle to enforce Kenyon’s departure for 12 could hardly have been seen as a pre-cursor to a whirlwind fall of wickets.
Kyle then dismissed Budgen, but owed it all to Chris Thomas at point who briliantly clung onto a meaty square cut inches from the ground.
And Thomas repeated the dose moments later when he clutched onto another rasper at backward point to see the back of the dangerous Phil West, as Jones claimed his first scalp.
Birch was yorked by Jones for 3 before Green pro Roberts totally misjudged a run to Sam Holden who had time to take aim and hit the stumps.
At 20 for 5, a comparative fightback was launched by Nick Bridgeford – who survived being bowled off a Jones no-ball – and Ashley Williams and it was another 25 runs before Kyle nudged back Williams’ middle stump.
Jones was in full swing by now and bowled the last four batsmen in the space of one run.
Despite losing both openers, James Wharmby for 8 and Jones for 18, Prestwich ambled to victory with 66 overs to spare.
The five point victory came as a welcome boost as the Heys side had lost out narrowly at top-five side Flowery Field the day before.
Facing one of the best attacks in the league, Prestwich found it tough going batting first after the second ball loss of Thomas.
Wharmby (16) and Holden (27) slowly and steadily put together a 43-run partnership but were unable to capitalise. With a run rate hovering at the two-an-over mark, acceleration was the key but that only resulted in the loss of more wickets.
However, at 85 for 6, the necessary impetus was provided by Gareth Barnes who struck a fine 34 – the top score in the whole game – and aided by a late flourish from Lewis Johnston, who finished unbeaten on 26, a respectable score of 147 for 7 was posted.
The Heys side could not have got off to a better start when opener Mistry was caught by wicketkeeper Barnes off Kyle’s first delivery.
But Dodd decided he was not in for a bit of pitter patter, as he swung to good effect. However, a mix-up saw Weston run out for 15 with the score on 40.
Teenager Nick Carter made a memorable impression on his debut appearance with a wicket in his first over, tempting Dodd to carve the ball into Kyle’s hands at backward point for 30.
With Tom Armstrong forming an all-spin attack, the run rate was shackled and the game became a real nip and tuck affair.
Flowery seemingly held the upper hand until intermittently losing a wicket, putting Prestwich back in with a good shout. Armstrong tempted Hawley to slice the ball to Thomas at point for 12 and then Carter picked up his second wicket of Dickin for 15.
Armstrong’s 12-over spell cost just 11 runs as Holden was then brought into the attack and took two quick wickets, the second a smart catch at first slip by Steven Lorenzini, making it 133 for 7.
Milner played and missed on several occasions but Prestwich had no further joy and Flowery pro Steve Oddy blasted a six for victory onto the clubhouse slates with three overs to spare – ending a valiant effort from a young Heys side.
