Prestwich 205-6 (5) v Irlam 35ao (0)
LCL Division One at Heys Road, Prestwich
31st July 2010
A half-century and a five-for from Professional Danny Jones, plus a five wicket haul for Phil Kyle, earned Prestwich the five points as they blasted through Irlam at Heys Road leaving the visitors all out for just 35 as Steve Lorenzini’s men recorded a big 170 run win in Division One.
REPORT – Irlam won the toss and captain Matt Hood elected to bowl first at The Heys last Saturday, strange as his side didn’t have any bowlers in it – although you probably can’t be too harsh considering what happened in the second half.
Professional Danny Jones and James Wharmby opened the Prestwich innings and although Jones got on top of the bowling early, punishing Khan’s numerous over pitched deliveries, Wharmby struggled for fluency until Harris unleashed a dreadfully slow half tracker, which was met with an equally poor pull shot straight into Hood’s hands at mid wicket, one of those where cricket is the only winner, James gone for 2.
Sam Holden next then, and despite a couple of boundaries, again struggled to find any fluency against this Irlam attack which boasted such riches as erm, well anyway, Sam was caught at cover playing a limp wristed drive for 16, immediately before Jones was undone by one of the confused Irlam batsmen and had his off stump nurdled back, but his 51 had come in good time and kept everyone interested.
Cue a five over interlude whilst Skipper Lorenzini and Oliver Holt got accustomed to proceedings. Holt let us know when they were ready by hitting a four and we were off again. With 10 over’s remaining, 7 wickets left and the score on 145, all the talk on the players balcony was of 250+ but the partnership of 78 was broken when Steven was stumped (he wasn’t the only one) for 37.
Holt tried to accelerate and reached his 50 from 76 balls before being given out LBW from the next ball – he didn’t like the decision, he stood his ground, before the sonic boom from near the scorebox blew him back up to the pavilion.
Gareth Barnes and Lewis Johnston had license to thrill at this late stage but their long nurtured dreams of a 100 + strike rate will have to wait for another day, Barnes departed for 12 caught somewhere near the boundary attempting a second maximum of the day.
Chris Thomas brought the innings to a glorious conclusion by thumping the last ball for six onto the banking to drag Prestwich kicking and screaming past the 200 mark for only the second time this season, 205 for 6 was the final score.
In reply Irlam lost their skipper to the first ball of the innings, caught by Barnes, falling over forwards, off the bowling of Jones.
Phil Kyle also struck in his first over – Jacksons thigh pad.
It didn’t get much better for Irlam, the only highlight of the innings being two outstanding catches by Sam Holden, made possible by the fact that, unusually, he was actually watching. He was so surprised he has had to go on holiday and misses this week’s game.
Irlam were dismissed for just 35 runs. Jones with 5 wickets, Kyle with 3, and External Sources chipped in with a couple of cheeky ones.
