BRIAN GARSTANG

Thursday June 16th 2011 | Club

Brian, a former Tennis and Cricket member of our club, passed away last week. All Brian’s friends at PCTBC (and I count myself lucky to be one of them) offer their sincere condolences to all Brian’s family.

My memories of Brian (pictured, centre) go back to 1966 when I first joined the club. I remember a man who was the centre of all social activity in the club and an active Tennis and Cricket player. He was a member of Peter Cope’s 2nd XI Championship winning side and was an aggressive hard hitting batsman.

I remember travelling in Brian’s green Mini Van to many away Sunday XI fixtures (prior to the drink diving regulations) where we enjoyed several games and stayed until very late at night! (I think the Loophole Lawyer would have struggled to get us off). When Brian laughed we all laughed, a great guy and a superb member of our club.

Brian loved his association with the club which never wavered during a period of ill health which forced his early retirement from work as a Manager of the Sedgley Park branch on the National Westminster Bank.

His illness never dulled his sense of fun. I have fond memories of Brian’s kids John and Jane growing up at Prestwich and I know how proud Brian was of both of them and his quite wonderful wife Barbara.

John came through our youth teams and went on to grace the Bolton League and finally to return to Prestwich and to provide help and support to the latest generation of Prestwich Cricketers coming through the 3rd and 2nd teams. Typical of a Garstang! Something I know that made Brian very proud.

God bless Brian.

Brian’s funeral will at Stand Church at 1100am on Friday 17th June and afterwards at his club.
