BOWL OUT CREATES HISTORY

Prestwich are three games away from playing in a national flagship final after a landmark weekend.

The Heys side overcame Darwen in the regional final of the ECB National Club Championship when the weather forced the clash to be reduced to a bowl-out, winning 4-2.

A heavy downpour wiped out any chance of playing the game against the Northern League highflyers on Sunday.

The sudden death drama saw Tom Gibson twice hit the stumps, while Chris and Danny Jones were also on target.

This has now earned an away trip to Shrewsbury this Sunday in the last 16; the opponents are current champions of the Birmingham Premier League.

It is the furthest Prestwich has ever reached in this competition where the final this year is being held at The County Ground in Derby.

The result topped an excellent weekend as the day before, they had gone top of the Lees Lancashire County League after comfortably beating Thornham by 88 runs.

Rivals Woodhouses lost at Dukinfield giving Prestwich a four-point cushion.

Thornham found it hard to keep up with the Jones’s when they visited The Heys.

Danny blasted 63 and Chris Jones bagged 5 for 25, while skipper Steven Lorenzini continued his rich vein of form with a vital 61.

Thornham opted to bowl first but Jones took full advantage of a number of short-pitched deliveries and raced into the 40s.

The wicket was far from straightforward with some exaggerated bounce and Shah was only bowler early on to make the home batsmen graft.

Shah claimed the wicket of Steve Orrell, caught behind by Harrop for 2, and Matt Wiley mishit a pull shot off Maghuire for 10, before Sam Holden dragged the ball onto his stumps for 20, leaving the score on 89 for 3.

Jones reached his 50 in 48 balls as Lorenzini bedded himself in and began to work the bowling around.

Jones was bowled for 63 by the persistent Shah – an innings of 10 fours and two sixes, which took him past the 500-run mark for the season in all competitions.

James Wharmby had made 13 when he got a snorter of a delivery from Shah and was caught at gully for 13.

Chris Thomas was left marooned by the errant call of his skipper but Gibson played another fine late innings cameo, hitting 23 before nicking to keeper Harrop.

Lorenzini’s 100-ball innings ended on 61, caught by Mahmood, and included 11 boundaries, but the total of 211 put Prestwich in a strong popstion. Shah was the outstanding bowler, returning 3 for 54 from 21 overs.

Andy Bradley struck twice early to put Thornham on the back foot at 12 for 2.

But it was Chris Jones who started to undo the middle order as he removed opener Harrop for 20 with the score on 45 and the wickets began to fall at steady intervals.

Maguire (27), Tommy Grey (25) and Stevie Grey (20) all made it in the 20s but weren’t able to build on it, as the required run rate spiralled.

Chris Jones completed his five wicket haul – his third of the season – having Shah caught by Elliot Woodage, who had earlier taken a steepling catch to dismiss Tommy Grey.

Brother Danny (2 for 23) wrapped up the remaining two wickets to dismiss the visitors for 123. Bradley ended with 3 for 59 from his stint.

* An innings of 106 not out from David Taylor guided Prestwich 2nds to a four-wicket victory over Thornham, John Kerambrum taking 4 for 35. Prestwich 3rd XI recorded a nine-wicket win over Royton having dismissed them for 68. Peter Lorenzini with 4 for 16 and Karl West 4 for 19 doing the damage.

* Prestwich face an away trip to Woodbank in the league on Saturday before their Shrewsbury trip the folllowing day.
