With the onset of midweek fixtures for all four of our senior teams over the last couple of weeks, the games have been coming thick and fast – almost every other day in fact.
So here’s a quick round-up of how we’ve been getting on.
The First Team travelled to Chew Moor Brook in the league but two late goal by the home side stunned Prestwich and gave the Bolton side a 2-1 win.
But there wasn’t much time to dwel on matters as just 52 hours later, Craig Howarth’s men were back in action at Tyldesley United in the 1XI Cup Second Round. Tom Walsh’s 50th minute strike set Prestwich on their way before a Tyldesley own goal from Martin Hill’s corner sealed our progression to the Quarter Final where a trip to Rossendale Amateurs awaits next Tuesday.
Then, just 48 hours later, Prestwich welcomed Horwich Victoria to Heys Road in the Premier Division. Leading scorer Ashley Hoolighan tapped the home side in to a 20th minute lead converting Sean Haslam’s centre from close range.
However, Victoria gave a good account of themselves but found the Prestwich defence difficult to break down. Then when skipper Richard Steadman hammered in a 70th minute strike, the points were all but safe. Hoolighan scored again before Walsh completed the scoring in what turned out to be a comfortable 4-0 win.
The Reserves dropped their first points of the season as second placed Oldham Hulmeians Reserves grabbed a 1-0 win at Heys Road. Prestwich wasted a change to equalise when a first half penalty was saved from the Oldham ‘keeper. The visitors then stood firm to finally bring manager Liam Morrissey’s superb 21 match winning run to an end.
The team got straight back on track though with a regulation 3-0 win over Bolton Wyresdale Reserves four days later with goals from Jordan Clegg, Michael Hoggard and Phil Byrnes. Oldham’s subsequent 4-2 loss at Accrington Amateurs means the Reserves need just two more wins to seal the Division Four Championship.
The first of those two wins could come on Thursday as they visit 9th placed Rossendale Amateurs B at Marl Pits.
The A Team continued their promotion challenge with a couple of impressive wins. First Robbie Monetti’s strike gave Andrew Howath’s men a 1-0 win over Old Mancunians A at the Armitage Centre before goals from Simon McMahon (penalty) and Bryan Leckie sealed a 2-1 win over Radcliffe Boys Reserves at Close Park.
The thirds could make it a hat-trick of successes with Thursday’s visit to 4th placed Thornleigh Reserves as second placed Prestwich look to keep in those two promotion places.
The Sunday Team bounced back from that humiliating loss against Wagonmakers to record a 5-2 win against Huntley Mount, a 3-2 win over The New Swan and a 4-4 draw with Cheers Bar.
Those vital seven points gave Jamie Comiskey’s team a 12 point advantage over second-bottom Swan in the battle to beat the drop.
