PRESTWICH OUSTED FROM TOP SPOT

Monday June 25th 2012 | Cricket

PRESTWICH were ousted from top spot in the Lees Lancashire County League – through no fault of their own.

Heavy rain forced the abandonment of their top-of-the table clash with Glossop on Saturday without a ball being bowled.

It is the third successive Saturday the Heys side have been frustrated by the weather and unable to complete a game.

They had been hopeful of playing on the Glossop pitch, but two heavy late morning downpours put paid to their chances.

The cancellation also allowed third-placed Woodbank to close on the leading duo with a win at Irlam.

Prestwich were kicking their heels on Sunday, but this time they missed out due to there being an odd number of teams in the league.

Woodbank scraped a dramatic one-run victory over Glossop, catapulting the Bury side to the top of the league.

The first team is hoping for the sun to shine on them this weekend with two home fixtures. They face fifth-placed Roe Green on Saturday, followed by a Walkden Cup semi-final clash with Glossop in a bid to make the final for the second year running.

* The Heys ground made a remarkable recovery from last Friday’s monsoon conditions – so much so the second team game at home to Glossop started on time

However, the home side failed to capitalise and Glossop ran out winners by 45 runs.
