RECORD BREAKING ORRELL

Tuesday July 24th 2012 | Cricket

On Saturday at Egerton Street, Denton, left hand batsman Steve Orrell (above right) started the day just 5 runs short of equalling another left hander’s record aggregate number of runs for Prestwich 1st XI since the 2nd World War.

That record was held by ex professional Ken Morgan (above left) with 11,230 who played between 1957 and 1984. Orrell has played with a similar longevity making his debut as an 18 year old in 1982 and he was circumspect on Saturday, scoring four singles before claiming the record with a sweep over square leg for six.

Their records bare a remarkable similarity as can be seen below.

INNINGS NOT OUT TOP SCORE AVERAGE 50s 100s
S.R. ORRELL 621 92 132no 21.24 50 2
K. MORGAN 537 90 104no 25.12 51 2

Whilst Ken also had a good pair of hands and took 137 catches for Prestwich, Orrell’s record of 290 to date by an outfield player (he took 3 in last weekend’s 2 matches) will surely be one that is never beaten. The next highest is 155.

Ken’s best year for runs was in 1973 when he scored 734 and he passed 500 in a season on another two ocassions. Steve’s best was 807 in 1992 and he passed 500 another six times.

They both captained the Club and played for the Inter-League representative side.
