NEW SEASON IS HERE – GLOSSOP PREVIEW

LEAGUE champions Prestwich CC face a hot reception on Saturday as they set out to win the title for the third year on the trot.

They travel to Derbyshire to face one of their fiercest rivals, Glossop, in what is undoubtedly the standout match on the opening day of the Lees Lancashire County League season.

It will be a baptism of fire for new skipper Andy Bradley, who hopes his team can lay down an early marker on their triple championship ambitions.

Glossop were amongst their closest challengers last year, and are expected to put up a bold bid again this year.

Prestwich have recruited their former player Carl Hey as professional, whilst retaining the services of Danny Jones, although the side is likely to be without four of last year’s title-winning side.

The Heys side warmed up for their league opener with a challenge match on Saturday at Bamford Fieldhouse, winners of the Saddleworth League, and lost by five wickets.

Prestwich posted a score of 157 for 6, from 45 overs, with Hey scoring a fine half century, and Sam Holden striking 26 and debutant Tom Scott 21 not out.

In reply, Bamford had looked to be cruising to victory, led by former Lancashire player Paddy McEwan. But when he was bowled by Hey for 35, and Holden struck twice in one over, the home side wobbled. Hey then grabbed a second wicket to finish with 2 for 27, leaving Bamford on 112 for 5.

But an unbeaten 21 from Mel Austin helped steer them to victory, although an extras column amounting to 32 did not help Prestwich’s cause.
