It was a weekend to remember for Prestwich 2XI as they firstly secured promotion to GMCL Division 2 on Saturday and then, in Patriots colours, went and won their T20 Finals the very next day!
Saturday’s 7 wicket win over Roe Green at Heys Road meant the Seconds cannot now finish outside of the promotion places.
An unbeaten 83 from Daniel McCall, which included 13 fours, and 51 from Sam Baldwin were the highlights as Dylan Kane’s men chased down their 192 target with 7 overs to spare.
They’ll now be looking to battle it out for the league title over the remaining weeks of the season.
• Roe Green 2XI 191ao (Lester 2-17, Reeve 2-41, Staley 2-53, McCall 2-56); Prestwich 2IX 192-3 (McCall 83*, Baldwin 51)
Elsewhere there was no such luck for the First Team as they fell to a second consecutive defeat in their Premier 2 encounter at Heyside.
• Heyside 1XI 289-9 (Jackson 3-69); Prestwich 1XI 214ao (Wharmby 41, Van Zyl 39)
On Sunday, the 2XI Finals Day took centre stage at Brooksbottom CC with Prestwich Patriots taking on Flixton Fire in the opening match-up.
And it couldn’t have been a much closer affair as the Heys Road men clinched it by just 3 runs.
Thomas Orrell top scored with 48 before some tight late innings bowling from Charlie Jackson kept the required rate rising. Consecutive ball wicket pairs from Finlay Lester and in the last over from Jack Doyle sent Prestwich through.
• Prestwich Patriots 154-8 (Orrell 48); Flixton Fire 151-6 (Doyle 2-24, Staley 2-28, Lester 2-30)
Edgworth Fury then despatched hosts Brooksbottom by 7 wickets to set up a final with Dylan Kane’s team.
Winning the toss and batting, Thomas Orrell was topping the runs again for the team, this time scoring 51. Good support from Doyle (28), Dan Ahern (26) and Sam Baldwin (25) before Hassnain Ashfaq’s bit hitting unbeaten 11 ball cameo added another 34 runs to the total.
Needing 193 to take the title, Edgworth couldn’t have got off to much worse of a start as they found themselves 2-2 at the end of their very first over. Wilf Reeve doing the damage with catches from Kane and Matthew Cuthbert.
And when Sam Staley had Waddicar caught by Baldwin in the second over, the Patriots were really in the ascendancy.
But into the fray came Kieran Shields who pretty much single-handedly took the game back to Prestwich. However, his unbeaten 100 from 71 balls was never enough to get the Edgworth worm on top as partners came and went.
Prestwich Patriots secured the GMCL20 2XI Trophy with a 38 run win.
• Prestwich Patriots 192-7 (Orrell 51); Edgworth Fury 154-6 (Staley 3-29)
Three other games to recap on Sunday as Prestwich 3XI lost out by 6 wickets at Clifton, the Fours tied at home to Swinton Moorside and the Fifth Team enjoyed a 35 run win at Roe Green.
Here’s Skipper Richard Hatchett’s report from the Fifths.
Prestwich 5s won the toss at Roe Green and batted in the sunshine. Sahil got off to a good start with a run a ball 12 before being caught out. A couple of quick wickets left Richard (50 ret no) and Hashim to rebuild with a partnership of 40. After Hashim’s departure Richard and Gary (31*) continued the run gathering and after a second flurry of quick wickets Gary and Mike (14) finished the innings with a partnership of 42 to set a score of 152 one ball shy of the allotted 40 overs.
Roe Green set about the chase and after losing their first wicket on 26 they then fell to 41-4 with Mike, Rob (1-16), Anwar (1-16), and keeper Harry Wolstenholme with a sharp run out doing the damage. Chances came and went with some dropped catches of variable difficulty, after a fumbled catch by Hasnain which was outrageously scooped up by Sahil running at full pelt sparked a revival in the field. The hosts reached 95-5 to be in sight of the finish line when Hashim took his first wicket making it 96-6. Roe Green nudged to 99 when Hashim (4-8) then took an outstanding all-bowled hat-trick to bring Prestwich within one wicket of victory. After a last wicket stand of 18 Mike (2-9) then took the last wicket with Sahil completing his own hat-trick of catches.
The win takes the 5s to 9 wins out of 12 for the season. The game saw a creditable debut for Max Britstone and further contributions from fellow youngsters Hasnain Imran (1-18), Max Hunt, and Harry Wolstenholme continuing their development in senior games.
